To teach technical fall protection equipment users to gain access to and egress from all areas on open structures e.g. telecommunications towers, pylons, and other open lattice steel structures.
This course conforms to most of the requirements of the "Competent Climber" in the National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) Tower Climber Fall Protection Training Standards.

Pre-course requirements
None. A head for heights will be required for successful completion. The course is physically demanding and will be probably more physical than the delegate encounters in their normal daily workplace. Delegates must certify themselves fit to attend the course and must declare any medical condition they feel could compromise their own safety whilst at height.
Certification
Valid for 2 years on successful completion.
Course Timetable and contents
DAY ONE (Day One curriculum same as Basic Tower Climbing Course)
Presentation
- Introduction to height safety.
- Legislation and selection of control measures.
- Work Categories
- Hazards at height.
- Selection of personal fall protection equipment (PFPE).
Practical
- Harness fitting, climbing a vertical ladder.
- Use of lanyard and pole strap
DAY TWO
Presentation and practical (on-site)
- Open structure climbing with twin lanyards.
Delegates will be introduced to open structure climbing techniques. The instructor will rig a rope to approx. 2/3 height of the tower along the primary access route. Students will use this for safety along with an EN353-2 fall arrest device instead of the fixed fall arrest system - Use of temporary fall arrest lines on open structure.
The instructor will teach delegates how to tie fig-8/ fig-9 on a bight knots as terminations for temporary lines.
Practical
- Further climbing practice and instructor evaluation of delegates.
- Use of temporary footloops shown, plus instructor demonstration of high access rescue techniques
